Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Monday evening, September 14, 2026, that an oil tanker exploded and caught fire after hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as US President Donald Trump confirmed Washington's openness to reaching an agreement with Tehran.
Revolutionary Guards say tanker hit mines
The Fars News Agency quoted the Revolutionary Guards as saying the tanker hit mines in the strait, without specifying when the incident occurred. The announcement came a day after the British maritime trade operations agency reported that a vessel had been struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the waterway and urged ships to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
On the political front, Trump said in a post that Iran wants to reach an agreement “quickly and intensely,” adding that the United States would decide whether to enter into an agreement with Tehran and that it was open to the idea. The US president did not announce the start of a new round of talks or set terms for a possible agreement.
An Iranian commercial vessel was also attacked near the island, amid continuing military tensions and a decline in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
