Israeli media reports said on Sunday, 4 October 2026, that around 3,000 US troops had been deployed in Israel as part of military preparations for a possible new confrontation, as the United States strengthens its military presence in the Middle East amid continuing tensions with Iran.

Duties of US troops in Israel

Al Hadath TV quoted Israeli media as saying that the US force had been deployed in anticipation of a new escalation. The Israeli Walla website reported that the troops’ duties include operating air defence systems, alongside pilots and support and logistics teams.

The announced distribution of duties places the US force beyond a conventional ground deployment, encompassing capabilities related to protecting airspace, operating defence systems, supporting air operations and securing the supplies and services needed to sustain military activity. The report of the troops’ deployment inside Israel comes alongside broader US movements in the region.

US naval reinforcements head towards the region

A US official told the Associated Press on Thursday, 1 October, that the US military was sending around 9,000 personnel aboard a group of ships bound for the Middle East, as part of reinforcements that include a third aircraft carrier. The naval force heading to the region comprises more than 7,000 sailors and around 2,000 US Marines.

The group includes the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and the cruiser USS Chosin, as well as the amphibious ready group led by USS Makin Island, accompanied by the landing ships USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage.

According to the US official, the arrival of the new group could bring the number of US aircraft carriers in the region to three by the end of October 2026, raising the US naval force to more than 20,000 sailors and Marines, alongside hundreds of aircraft. The region currently has the aircraft carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, as well as the amphibious ready group attached to USS Boxer.

Washington had assembled three aircraft carrier groups in the Middle East in April 2026, in a deployment described as the first of its kind since 2003. The new movements followed remarks by US President Donald Trump in which he spoke of the possibility of intensifying strikes against Iran after the midterm elections scheduled to take place in the United States on 3 November 2026, without disclosing further details about the military options under consideration.

The concurrent reports of forces in Israel and naval reinforcements heading to the region point to a heightened level of US readiness through air defence systems, aviation, logistical support and naval forces, amid fears that the regional confrontation could widen.
