Striker Omar Al Somah has returned to Syria’s football squad after an absence of about two years, having been selected by Spanish head coach José Lana in a 23-man squad for two international friendlies against Jordan and Uzbekistan. Syria will visit Jordan in the capital Amman on 27 September, before facing hosts Uzbekistan on 1 October.

Al Somah’s return coincides with his joining Damascus-based Al Wahda

Al Somah, 37, heads the squad on his return after an absence previously linked to administrative reasons. His international return coincides with his return to the Syrian league at the start of the current season, after joining Damascus-based Al Wahda on a two-year contract.

The striker left the domestic competition 15 years ago, specifically in 2011, when he moved from Al Fوتowa to Kuwait’s Al Qadsia. Al Somah enjoyed a long professional career, with his spell at Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli among its highlights, playing for the club for eight years from 2014. During that period, he scored 193 goals in 239 matches in all competitions.
