Reports: Russian businessman funded Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations

American and British reports said Russian businessman Umar Kremlev covered the costs of two nights of post-wedding celebrations for Donald Trump Jr. in the Bahamas. American and British media reports said Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, funded two nights of celebrations following the wedding of Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas last May, raising questions about the motives behind the spending and the nature of the relationship between the two men.

Funding post-wedding celebrations on private islands

About 50 people attended the celebrations, including members of the Trump family, as well as Kremlev and Russian figures. US President Donald Trump did not attend the wedding ceremony or the celebrations. He attributed his absence to having to remain in Washington because of talks related to the war on Iran.

A spokesman for Trump Jr. said Kremlev was a personal friend whom he met through a mutual friend, and that they shared interests in boxing, hunting and outdoor activities, denying any business relationship between them. Kremlev’s office likewise described the relationship as friendly and said the businessman had not discussed political issues with his American friends.

Kremlev’s ties to the Russian president and the International Boxing Association

Kremlev has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and heads the International Boxing Association, whose funding has been linked to the Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom. Putin awarded him the Order of Friendship in April, and he was part of a delegation accompanying the Russian president on a visit to China before the wedding. Ukraine imposed sanctions on Kremlev over his ties to the Kremlin.

In 2023, the International Olympic Committee withdrew its recognition of the association he heads, citing problems related to governance and funding sources. Former US intelligence officials warned that giving a gift of this size to the president’s son could raise questions about a possible effort to build influence or gain access to political circles.

A former FBI official said such arrangements raise the question of whether the recipient could become indebted to the donor.

These questions come against the backdrop of Trump Jr.’s previous association with the issue of Russian relations during his father’s 2016 election campaign, as well as his current relationship with Kremlev.
