Cairo’s El Sawy Puppet Theatre will present three concerts on September 2 and 3 at El Hikma Theatre in El Sawy Culturewheel in the Zamalek district, as part of the “Umm Kulthum Returns Anew” project, which revives the songs of the Star of the East with puppets and her musical ensemble.

Concert schedule and program

The first concert will take place at 8:30 p.m. on September 2. The following day will feature two concerts, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The concert program will feature “This Is My Night” and “You Are My Life” in a production that uses puppet theater to recreate the atmosphere of Umm Kulthum’s concerts and introduce her work to new generations of audiences.

A project running since 2006

The “Umm Kulthum Returns Anew” project was launched in 2006, alongside the establishment of El Sawy Puppet Theatre. It began with a monthly concert of her songs, before the number of performances increased to more than one a month due to audience demand.

Engineer Mohamed El Sawy leads the project, operates the puppets and develops the production. El Sawy Puppet Theatre’s program also includes productions reviving songs by other artists, including Abdel Halim Hafez and Farid al-Atrash, in a format combining music and puppetry.
