The cities of Marib and Taiz on Friday evening marked the 64th anniversary of the 26 September Revolution by lighting the revolution’s flame and holding official and popular events, as military clashes and rapidly escalating field confrontations took place on the fronts in both governorates between government forces and fighters from the Ansar Allah group (the Houthis).

Marib and Taiz mark the revolution’s anniversary

Al-Arada said the principles of the Yemeni revolution would remain firmly established and that no party would be able to undermine them, saying that the will of the Yemeni people was decisive in continuing the effort to restore the state and its institutions. In Taiz, in south-western Yemen, the anniversary flame was lit during a public celebration held on Gamal Abdel Nasser Street in the centre of the city.

Broad public participation in Taiz

Local and military leaders and social figures took part in the event, along with crowds of citizens who attended the anniversary ceremony. Residents from various neighbourhoods in Taiz and surrounding areas made their way to the main street, carrying national flags and banners and chanting slogans affirming their commitment to the principles of the republican system and the gains of the revolution that overthrew the Imamate regime in 1962.

The Taiz celebration was part of a programme of popular events held in several Yemeni governorates to mark the anniversary and reaffirm the principles of the republic. Alongside the celebrations, Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi, in a speech marking the 64th anniversary, called on Yemenis to mobilise, answer the national call and rally around the armed forces and security services, and urged them to join their ranks through official channels.

In his speech, al-Alimi announced an amnesty for those who abandon fighting alongside the Houthis, stressing that the 26 September Revolution represented a milestone in entrenching the republic, the rule of law and citizenship.
