American singer Taylor Swift became the most awarded artist in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards after raising her total to 32 during the 2026 ceremony, overtaking Beyoncé, with whom she had shared the record at 30 awards each.

Swift wins Video of the Year and Best Direction

Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and Best Direction for the video for “Opalite”. She dedicated the Video of the Year award to the late singer Dolly Parton, describing her as “the ultimate show woman”.

Swift said the stories Parton told through her songs were exceptionally rich and vivid, to the extent that listening to them felt like watching a music video, praising her ability to build complete images and narratives through her lyrics. The ceremony also saw Swift honoured with the Best Art Direction award, which was introduced and presented for the first time this year.

The ceremony’s organisers dedicated the award to artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and developed visual storytelling techniques. Actress Dakota Johnson, a friend of Swift for years, presented the award during the ceremony and described the singer-director’s work as emotionally rich worlds full of detail.

After accepting the honour, she premiered the video for her new song “Patient Zero”, released on the extended edition of the album “The Life of a Showgirl”. Swift directed the new video, which stars Dakota Johnson and actor Colin Farrell. Cinematography was handled by Emmanuel Lubezki, who won an Oscar for work including the films “The Revenant” and “Birdman”.

In a post following the video’s premiere, Swift said she had drawn its atmosphere from Gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers. She added that the house where the events take place symbolises the chill that affects a romantic relationship that has faded over time.

Although Swift set the record for the total number of MTV awards she has won over the years, Madonna topped the winners’ list for the 2026 ceremony alone after receiving seven awards, including Artist of the Year.
