Users circulated an image on social media showing a Palestinian child hiding behind the concrete base of an electricity pole in the town of al-Zawiya, west of Salfit in the occupied West Bank, while returning from school as Israeli forces entered neighbourhoods in the town.

The image shows the child carrying his schoolbag and keeping his body behind the pole in an attempt to stay out of sight of an Israeli military patrol moving through the area. The child used the concrete block as temporary shelter on his way home, according to the circulated image, whose photographer and original source of publication remain unknown.

Image prompts anger and distress on digital platforms

The image sparked a wave of anger and distress among digital-platform users. Activists and bloggers said it reflected part of the reality faced by Palestinian children and showed how the journey home from school, an ordinary part of a child’s day, can become a trip accompanied by fear and concern for their safety.

Zaher Abu Hussein, a member of the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate and the International Federation of Journalists, commented on the scene, saying the child had been carrying his schoolbag home but looked for a pole to hide behind from the soldiers in al-Zawiya instead of heading confidently towards his family. He added that the scene embodied the loss of childhood, with the child carrying his bag on his back while facing a fear beyond his years.

Comments link scene to children’s right to safety

Another user wrote that, on his way home from school, the child was not looking for a game or a friend, but for a pole behind which he could shelter for fear of the soldiers. The user described the image as encapsulating the harsh reality of a terrified childhood, bringing together the schoolbag the child carried and the fear that preceded his steps towards home.

One blogger said that a child’s safe return from school was not a political demand, but one of the most basic internationally recognised rights of childhood. The blogger said that, in the Palestinian case, this right had become fraught with daily risks as a result of Israeli military deployments inside residential neighbourhoods and along roads leading to schools.

The blogger added that the fear experienced by Palestinian children on their way home did not, in his view, represent an isolated incident, but was linked to a reality in which anxiety formed part of the details of their daily lives, depriving a generation of its childhood and turning school from a place of learning into a source of fear.

He concluded by stressing that the children of Palestine were not asking for special treatment, but simply wanted to return to their homes like children everywhere else in the world, without having to hide.
