Russia said on Monday that it had found Western small arms and substances it described as toxic and banned in parts of Donbas that had passed from the control of Ukrainian forces, as the Russian Defence Ministry announced a drone strike on a fuel station in Kyiv.

It added that caches containing containers of the substance had been found and that it was working to identify routes used to supply chemicals to Ukraine. Kyiv did not comment. Separately, Russia’s Defence Ministry said the Varyag drone systems brigade had targeted a fuel station in the Ukrainian capital with Geran drones, claiming it was heavily used by Ukrainian forces, military leaders and paramilitary units.

The ministry also announced strikes on trains and military supplies transported by rail for Ukrainian forces in the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions.

The strikes come amid an escalation in long-range air attacks between Russia and Ukraine in recent months, while the front lines have remained largely stable.
