Türkiye’s Defence Ministry announced that the chief of staff, General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, would travel to Saudi Arabia on 25 September 2026 to take part in a meeting of chiefs of staff held under the name “Makkah Defence Alliance”. The ministry said in a statement that Bayraktaroğlu “will travel to Saudi Arabia today to take part in a meeting of the chiefs of staff of the Makkah Defence Alliance”. The meeting was also described as being held under the “Makkah Agreement”. Reports said it would bring together the chiefs of staff of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, and that it was arranged after Saudi Arabia called for an urgent meeting between military officials from the three countries.
Preparations for the military meeting were preceded by a gathering in New York attended by Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The ministerial meeting was held while the three officials were in New York for the United Nations General Assembly meetings. They discussed preparations for the meeting of the chiefs of staff of the three countries in Saudi Arabia.
