Qatar will seek to secure early qualification for the semi-finals of the Gulf Cup 27 football tournament when they face Yemen on Sunday in the second round of Group B in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The tournament is being held from 23 September to 6 October 2026.
Qatar open with victory over Bahrain
Qatar enter the match after a successful start to the tournament under their Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui, beating holders Bahrain 2-0 last Thursday. Boualem Khoukhi scored the opening goal before captain Hassan Al-Haydos added the second from the penalty spot.
Yemen, by contrast, began their campaign with a heavy 4-0 defeat by the United Arab Emirates, complicating the position of the team coached by Algerian manager نور الدين ولد علي ahead of their meeting with Qatar, the Asian Cup champions in the last two editions.
Qualification calculations and Yemen’s fate
The group standings give Qatar the chance to secure a place in the semi-finals with a win of any kind, before their match against the United Arab Emirates in the final, third round. Yemen, meanwhile, need a win or at least a draw, then must await the outcome of the calculations in the final round when they meet Bahrain. Yemen hope to reach the knockout stages of the Gulf Cup for the first time in their history.
They will also enter their subsequent match against Bahrain with memories of their historic victory over them in the previous edition, Gulf Cup 26, held in Kuwait. However, a second defeat in the current edition would end their hopes and lead to an early exit in the first round. Qatar appear to have multiple options across the various lines, beginning with goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada, who impressed at the 2026 World Cup, and extending to the defensive trio of Boualem Khoukhi, Sultan Al-Brek and Pedro Miguel.
Qatar’s attacking options and Lopetegui’s instructions
The midfield includes Assim Madibo, Karim Boudiaf and Ahmed Fathi, while the attacking options include Almoez Ali, Ahmed Al-Ghanahi and Akram Afif. Lopetegui praised his players’ performance after the victory over Bahrain, saying they dealt well with the details of the match and showed a strong desire to win at the start of their campaign.
The manager linked that performance to the team’s aim of continuing to challenge for the title, which has eluded Qatar for 12 years, specifically since their last triumph in 2014 in Saudi Arabia. The Spanish manager urged his players to close the chapter on the first match and shift their focus to Yemen, stressing the importance of restoring their physical readiness given the short interval between matches and the high temperatures and humidity.
He expressed confidence in every member of his squad’s ability to maintain the required level, secure a second consecutive victory and strengthen their chances of progressing to the next round. At the same time, Lopetegui warned of the difficulty of the task against a team clinging to its last chance in the competition.
Yemen reorganise their defence under pressure
He noted that Gulf Cup tournaments have their own character and that their matches remain open to various possibilities, urging his players to maintain the highest levels of concentration throughout the game. For Yemen, hopes rest on goalkeeper Mohammed Aman, along with Nader Sahl, Haroun Al-Zubaidi, Rami Al-Wasmani, Radwan Al-Habishi, Osama Anbar, Abdulwasea Al-Matari, Omar Jolan, Nasser Mohammedouh, Omar Al-Dahi and Abdulmajid Sabara.
Noureddine Ould Ali will be required to reorganise his tactical approach, particularly defensively, after the mistakes that cost his team four goals against the United Arab Emirates. Yemen also need to limit the space available to Qatar’s attacking players and seek to cope with the technical and physical differences, as well as the greater experience of their opponents’ players.
The Algerian manager faces another challenge in restoring his players’ confidence after accusing them of negligence and failing to do enough following the opening defeat. The coaching staff are working to overcome the effects of that result and learn from it ahead of a match that will largely determine Yemen’s fate in the tournament.
Lopetegui also stressed that Qatar’s participation in the tournament was not part of preparations for the Asian Cup, explaining that he had not come to Saudi Arabia for that purpose but aimed to return to Doha with the Gulf Cup 27 title.
