Two people were killed and 14 others wounded in a drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, while at least five people were wounded in similar Russian strikes on Odesa in southwestern Ukraine early Sunday, amid escalating long-range air attacks between Moscow and Kyiv.
Damage from the attacks in Tatarstan and Odesa
The administration of the Republic of Tatarstan said the attack hit industrial and civilian facilities, adding that two of the wounded were in serious condition. Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev said a Ukrainian drone struck a tree and damaged a car carrying four people, killing two and seriously wounding the others. Belyaev added that four more people were wounded when a drone targeted a residential building.
Industrial facilities and civilian infrastructure were also damaged, and a fire broke out at one company before emergency crews brought it under control. Russian authorities had earlier said Ukraine targeted an oil refinery in the city. In Odesa, Ukrainian officials said at least five people were wounded in a Russian drone attack early Sunday.
The city’s military administration chief, Serhii Lysak, said residential areas in several districts were damaged as authorities began assessing the extent of the damage. Ukrainian officials had announced that two people were killed and 26 wounded on Saturday after a Russian drone struck a residential building in Odesa. Regional authorities also said other areas in western Ukraine came under attack from overnight through Sunday morning.
Russia announces attacks on Ukrainian facilities
In the course of military operations, Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had attacked logistical hubs and fuel, energy and transport facilities that it said were used by Ukrainian forces over the previous 24 hours, along with drone assembly workshops, storage sites and troop deployment areas in 146 locations.
The ministry estimated Ukrainian military losses during the same period at about 1,405 troops and said its air defenses had shot down 902 drones, seven guided aerial bombs and two U.S.-made HIMARS rockets.
Russia warns over fuel for the Zaporizhzhia plant
At the same time, Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia’s nuclear energy company Rosatom, accused Ukraine of targeting trucks carrying diesel fuel to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, saying the attack killed two Russian soldiers and wounded others. Likhachev said the attacks occurred Friday near the plant’s perimeter, warning that targeting fuel supplies could threaten its safety.
Ukrainian attacks have targeted Russian oil infrastructure, while Odesa, home to Ukraine’s main port, has faced repeated missile and drone strikes that have affected operations at key ports used for Ukrainian exports.
