Reciprocal drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine on Monday killed two girls in Tatarstan and three people in Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, while injuring at least 12 people in the two countries, as the Kremlin confirmed the continuation of Russian military operations inside Ukrainian territory.
Deaths and injuries in Russia and Ukraine
Authorities in the city of Nizhnekamsk, in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, said two girls were killed in a Ukrainian drone attack. The Krasnodar region’s emergency operations center also reported that five people, including a child, were injured after drone debris fell in the city of Sochi.
Ukraine reports casualties from drone attack
In Ukraine, the Chernihiv regional police said three people were killed and seven others injured in a Russian attack on the city of Pryluky in the country’s center. The Ukrainian Air Force said its defenses had shot down 85 of the 108 drones launched by Russia overnight, including Shahed, Gerbera and Italmas models, as well as other types.
According to the Ukrainian side, the drones were launched from Russia’s Oryol and Kursk regions, as well as from Russian-controlled Donetsk and Hvardiiske on the Crimean Peninsula. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said air defense, electronic warfare and mobile fire teams took part in repelling the attack.
The escalation came after Ukraine’s railway operator said a passenger train had come under attack two kilometers from the Polish border, shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European diplomats had used the same railway line. The Kremlin, meanwhile, said the Russian military was conducting operations across Ukrainian territory and would continue them.
Ukraine’s General Staff said the total number of Russian military personnel killed and wounded since the war began on February 24, 2022, had reached about 1,508,600, including 1,700 in the previous 24 hours.
It also published figures on Russian losses of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, aircraft, drones and other equipment. The data could not be independently verified, while Moscow does not disclose the toll of its army’s losses in the war.
