Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Kyiv on Tuesday of using visits by Western political figures to Ukraine to conceal the movements of military trains, amid the continuing war and rising security tensions in Europe.
Zakharova criticises Western visits to Ukraine
Zakharova said Ukrainian authorities were using Western politicians as “human shields”, pointing to their presence near trains carrying military equipment. The statement reflects Russia’s position on those visits and movements. Separately, the spokeswoman said Moscow was monitoring attempts by European countries to bring nuclear weapons closer to Russian territory.
She added that some European capitals were using what they call the “Russian threat” to justify strengthening the continent’s nuclear presence, warning against underestimating the risks of these weapons’ proliferation. The statements come amid European fears that the war could spread to NATO territory, after a passenger train was hit by a Russian drone near the Ukrainian border with Poland.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was prepared to halt its strikes inside Russian territory if it received guarantees that Moscow would likewise stop targeting vital Ukrainian facilities.
