Mehmet Uçum, a senior adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said the president could run for a new and final term if parliament approved bringing forward the election scheduled for 2028, proposing that the vote be held on April 16 that year. Uçum, who also serves as deputy head of the Presidency’s Legal Policies Board, said holding the election on the proposed date would require 360 lawmakers to support a decision to renew it.
Proposed date for the April 2028 election
That would bring the vote forward from its constitutional date in May 2028. Uçum said he ruled out holding the election in the final quarter of 2027 and believed it was more likely to be held in March or April 2028. He added that choosing April 16 was linked to the anniversary of the 2017 referendum that approved the transition to a presidential system.
Uçum’s proposal links the adoption of this decision to allowing Erdoğan to run again, but the date of the vote remains subject to a parliamentary decision.
