Palestinian Mashhour Shahir Mohammad Yassin, 51, was killed and another person was injured on Thursday 1 October 2026, during an attack by Israeli settlers on the village of Yasuf, east of Salfit in the northern West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The ministry said Yassin was killed by settler gunfire in the village.
Red Crescent details attack injuries and transfer of casualties
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said the man was wounded by live ammunition in the abdomen, while another person was injured by a bullet fragment in the side. The society added that its teams treated the casualties and took them to Salfit Government Hospital for treatment. Yassin was later pronounced dead from his injuries, according to the hospital's director, Mohammad al-Ramahi.
Yasuf village council head Juma Abdel Fattah said a group of settlers attacked the eastern part of the village on Thursday afternoon, using sticks and firearms. He added that Yassin went out to defend his home and was shot, while his nephew was also injured during the attack. According to Abdel Fattah, several settlements surround Yasuf, while a new outpost called Havat Anton was established in July 2026.
He said the village had seen repeated attacks with sticks and stones since the outpost was established, as well as homes being surrounded and attempts to steal livestock. The Israeli army said it was investigating the circumstances of the incident. No findings from the investigation had been announced by the time the initial information about the incident was published.
Violence in the West Bank has escalated since October 2023
The Yasuf incident comes amid escalating violence in the West Bank since the war in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023. According to an Agence France-Presse tally based on Palestinian Authority data, at least 1,112 Palestinians, including militants, have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers during that period.
United Nations data shows that settlers have killed at least 37 Palestinians since October 2023. By contrast, official Israeli data shows that at least 49 Israelis, civilians and military personnel, have been killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians or during clashes with Israeli forces.
Around three million Palestinians live in the West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem, alongside more than 500,000 Israeli settlers living in settlements deemed illegal under international law.
