An Indian seafarer was killed and 27 crew members of the bulk carrier MV Cape Dao were evacuated after it came under attack 25 nautical miles off the coast of Oman’s Musandam Governorate on Wednesday, while it was heading to India. Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said the evacuation was carried out by the Royal Oman Navy in coordination with the relevant authorities after the attack caused a fire in the vessel’s engine room.

Medical care provided and identity of dead seafarer confirmed

It added that the rescued crew members received the necessary medical care. The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed that the dead man was an Indian national, saying it was co-ordinating closely with Omani authorities to monitor the crew’s safety.

It also said 19 Indians were among the survivors and that it was in contact with the deceased’s family and the organisation responsible for his employment.

The incident increases the risks facing shipping near the Strait of Hormuz and in Omani waters, after commercial vessels and oil tankers were targeted in recent weeks, amid a decline in traffic through the maritime corridor.
