Minecraft to add The Sift dimension to both editions in 2027

Mojang is preparing to add The Sift to the Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft during 2027, making it the game’s first new dimension in more than 14 years. The fourth world will feature new areas, creatures, hazards and gameplay rules, after appearing early in Minecraft Dungeons 2.

Minecraft is set to receive a fourth dimension called The Sift during 2027. It will arrive in the Java and Bedrock editions as the first new dimension added to the game in more than 14 years, in an expansion that goes beyond updating existing areas to introduce an independent world for exploration, survival and building.

Mojang announces fourth dimension for Java and Bedrock editions

Mojang announced the new dimension during the Minecraft Live event held last September. The Sift will join the game’s three established dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether and the End, changing the basic structure on which Minecraft has relied for years.

Mojang describes The Sift as a vibrant, colourful world filled with spirits, featuring environments, creatures and gameplay rules not available in the existing dimensions. According to the details announced, the addition will not be limited to expanding an existing map or introducing a new biome. Instead, it will give players an independent space in which to move, explore, survive and build.

The company confirmed that the dimension will be released in the Java and Bedrock editions during 2027, without specifying an exact launch date for the main game. It has also yet to reveal how players will access it or all of its features, areas and creatures, and is expected to provide more information as its release approaches.

Meadows and Carapace are the first areas announced

Mojang has so far revealed two areas within the new world: Meadows and Carapace, while keeping other areas undisclosed so players can discover them for themselves. Published footage shows brightly coloured environments with a visual character distinct from the Overworld’s familiar appearance, as well as from the dark atmospheres that define the Nether and the End.

The differences are not limited to appearance and design. Xbox says The Sift imposes new rules that players will have to learn, alongside blocks and environmental hazards that can change how they explore and interact with the area. The dimension also contains new creatures, some of which may become allies to the player, while others represent threats requiring confrontation.

Information presented by Xbox indicates that changes within The Sift can affect the player and surrounding objects, in addition to hazards linked to the new blocks and environments. These elements mean that interacting with the dimension may depend on mechanics that differ from those familiar in the Overworld, whether during exploration, survival attempts or building.

The new gameplay rules have not yet been fully revealed

The full details of how those rules and changes will be applied in the main version of Minecraft have not yet been presented. Further information is expected to explain how the environmental hazards and new blocks will be used, how much they will affect players’ movements and strategies, and how the fourth world’s features will integrate with the core gameplay systems.

The Sift previously appeared in Minecraft Dungeons 2, which launched on 29 September last year, giving players an early opportunity to see some of the dimension’s features before its arrival in Minecraft in 2027. One of the game’s concepts involves mysterious rifts appearing in the world and transporting players to The Sift, where they face new threats and explore its different environments.

The Minecraft Dungeons 2 experience offers an initial glimpse of the new world’s identity, including some of the environments, creatures and rules that set it apart. However, Xbox confirmed that The Sift’s depiction in that game will not necessarily match the experience that will later arrive in the main version of Minecraft, and the two versions may differ in some respects.

The addition is significant because it is the first expansion of its kind to Minecraft’s world structure in more than 14 years. During that period, Mojang focused on developing the Overworld and expanding the two existing dimensions, rather than creating a new independent space to add to the three dimensions through which players have become accustomed to travelling.

Introducing a full dimension creates scope for new resources, environments, creatures and gameplay mechanics, rather than simply increasing the number of areas available within existing worlds. Travelling between dimensions and dealing with each one’s different features may also play a larger role in the experience, which is fundamentally based on the freedom to discover and reshape the world.

An independent space such as The Sift could support different approaches to exploration, survival and building, based on its own rules and hazards.

The dimension’s final form will become clearer as Mojang reveals its remaining areas, creatures and access methods, as well as setting its release date during 2027 for the Java and Bedrock editions.
