Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said early Tuesday that NATO fighters had shot down a drone over his country, in an incident occurring amid growing security concerns in the Baltic region. In a post on X, Nausėda praised the allies’ rapid response, stressing that readiness is critically important for the region as Russia’s war on Ukraine escalates.

Lithuania affirms air defence cooperation with NATO

He added that Lithuania would defend its airspace in cooperation with its NATO allies. Lithuania shares a border with Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea and also borders Belarus, a close ally of Moscow. Lithuanian security concerns have grown since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Lithuanian government says its military intelligence services have information indicating that Russia may be considering attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic states.
