Lebanese President Joseph Aoun warned on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, that any security vacuum in southern Lebanon could provide a pretext for attacks undermining national sovereignty, as Israeli operations were carried out in several southern towns, one of which killed one person, according to the National News Agency.

Security meeting at Baabda Palace

Aoun issued the warning while chairing a security meeting at Baabda Palace devoted to discussing conditions in the south generally and the Nabatieh area in particular. The participating security chiefs presented reports on various aspects of the situation in the area.

Aoun said the security deployment in Nabatieh was linked to the state's obligations and its negotiating position in the file with Israel, noting that maintaining internal security strengthens Lebanon's official position.

The Lebanese president described the army as the backbone of stability in the area, stressing that its duties complement the work of other security agencies. He also highlighted the army's role in protecting infrastructure and vital roads and facilitating residents' return to their towns.

One killed in strike targeting motorcycle

The National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone fired a guided missile at a motorcycle on the Marj Harouf-Zebdine road, killing one person.

Shelling, airstrikes and explosions hit southern towns

The agency reported artillery shelling targeting Beit Yahoun, and airstrikes on Wadi Zibqine in the Tyre district and Wadi Saluki from the direction of Shabraa in the Bint Jbeil district. It also said Israeli forces carried out explosions in Al-Qantara and the town of Mansouri south of Tyre.

In Khiam, Israeli tanks moved east of the town and opened heavy fire, according to reports, while homes were reportedly set ablaze in the western part of the Jabal neighborhood amid tensions in the area.
