The provisional death toll from floods that struck the Himalayan region along the Nepal-China border last Wednesday rose to 919 dead and 4793 missing, according to figures announced by Nepal's emergency management authority and reported by Chinese media on Monday.

Most victims in Nepal

Nepal's authority said the floods killed 903 people, while 4247 people remain missing in Nepal. Chinese media reported that 16 people were killed and 546 others missing in Chinese territory, bringing the provisional total in the two countries to the reported figures.

The number of missing residents from towns swept away by the water exceeded 2,000 in just three Nepalese districts: Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Makwanpur.

Contact lost with foreign nationals and workers

Contact was also lost with 592 foreign nationals and 933 workers at hydropower stations or dam projects in the region, as authorities continued to tally the dead and missing.

Bodies recovered in India

In India, authorities in Uttar Pradesh, which borders Nepal, announced the recovery of 17 bodies believed to be victims of the floods. Authorities are working to identify them, and their names were not included in Nepal's official tally.
