The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Wednesday condemned the Houthi group’s attempt to target Mecca and declared its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, as well as its support for the measures it is taking to protect the holy sites and the kingdom’s security and sovereignty. In a statement, the organisation said the attacks amounted to “terrorising civilians, violating the sanctity of holy sites and mosques, and provoking the feelings of Muslims around the world.”

OIC describes targeting holy sites as terrorism

It said acts targeting holy sites and civilian objects constitute “terrorism incompatible with Islamic values, customs, principles and international laws.” The organisation stressed that violating the sanctity of holy sites was “an unacceptable transgression that cannot be tolerated,” calling for those responsible to be deterred and for any attempts to harm them to be prevented.

It also affirmed its support for the measures Saudi Arabia is taking to safeguard the sanctity of the holy sites and the lives of Muslims. The statement came after Major General Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, announced that the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces had destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Houthi group on Tuesday evening, before it entered the restricted airspace over Mecca.
