Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman affirmed their countries’ commitment to ensuring the security and freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea during talks held in Cairo on Tuesday, as part of the Saudi crown prince’s working visit to Egypt.
Egyptian-Saudi coordination to address regional tensions
The talks covered strategic relations between the two countries and ways to develop them, as well as developments in the Middle East and challenges arising from regional tensions amid the US war on Iran. Both sides stressed the need to intensify coordination and communication on issues related to regional security and stability.
Egyptian presidency spokesman Mohamed el-Shennawy said Sisi had renewed Egypt’s support for Saudi Arabia and the Arab countries in confronting regional circumstances and affirmed his backing for measures taken by the kingdom to protect its security and stability.
Agreement on Yemen and a Palestinian settlement
He added that the Egyptian president supported reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Yemeni crisis, while bin Salman expressed his appreciation for Cairo’s positions supporting regional stability and peace. On the Palestinian issue, both sides affirmed that Egypt and Saudi Arabia shared the same position on reaching a fair and comprehensive settlement based on the two-state solution and resolutions of international legitimacy.
Regarding Sudan, Sisi and bin Salman affirmed their countries’ continued support for its security and stability and rejected equating the Sudanese Armed Forces with militias or illegitimate parallel entities. They stressed that threatening Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity poses a risk to the collective security of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the countries of the region.
