Apple on Wednesday unveiled the iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone, at a conference in Cupertino, California. The device starts at $1,999 for the 256-gigabyte storage model. Preorders open on October 16, ahead of its market launch on October 23.

Two displays and a foldable design

The phone uses a book-style design, with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display. Both displays support refresh rates of up to 120 hertz and peak brightness of 3,000 nits. The inner display has a nano-textured layer to reduce the appearance of the crease caused by folding.

Apple made the device’s frame from Grade 5 titanium and gave it an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. The phone is available in Starlight and Midnight, with storage options reaching 2 terabytes in the higher-end models.

A system designed for multitasking

The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which is designed to adapt to the device’s folded configurations and orientation. It allows users to run multiple apps and use the inner display in a way more similar to a tablet. It also supports Apple Pencil, though the company said the feature will become available later this year.

The phone includes Apple’s A20 Pro chip and C2 modem for connecting to fifth-generation networks. It uses a fingerprint sensor built into the side button instead of facial recognition, while an Apple Watch can also be used to unlock the device.

Two 48-megapixel rear cameras

The rear camera system consists of a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, without a dedicated optical-zoom camera. The ultrawide camera offers a 120-degree field of view, while the main camera uses sensor-shift optical image stabilization.

The phone has a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera in the outer display, as well as a FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display. It is Apple’s first use of an under-display front camera in an iPhone.
