From Electricity to Ports: A New Kuwaiti Path to Support Lebanon’s Economy

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah discussed expanding economic cooperation between the two countries in investment, energy and trade during a meeting in New York, as Kuwait expressed a desire to increase its investments in Lebanon and was expected to contribute to securing fuel oil for Électricité du Liban.

Infrastructure and energy investments

The meeting addressed investment opportunities in infrastructure, transport, energy and regional interconnection projects. Salam outlined the opportunities available to investors, while the Kuwaiti side expressed its readiness to strengthen cooperation and investment in these sectors.

The Lebanese government is seeking to attract investment and support infrastructure projects while implementing economic and financial reforms and restructuring key sectors, including electricity.

Expected contribution to securing fuel oil

Salam praised Kuwait’s support for Lebanon, particularly in the energy sector, and welcomed the expected contribution to securing fuel oil for Électricité du Liban, as efforts continue to reform the sector and increase its capacity to provide a more sustainable power supply.

Ports and trade

Salam highlighted the role of Lebanese ports in facilitating imports from and exports to Kuwait, with the aim of expanding trade ties alongside investment cooperation.

The two sides agreed to work on expanding trade and investment and to prepare for a Lebanese-Kuwaiti economic and investment forum as soon as possible. They also discussed regional developments and the need to de-escalate and preserve the security and stability of the region, while Kuwait’s Crown Prince reaffirmed his country’s continued support for Lebanon.
