Cosumar Group plans to launch industrial production of food-grade liquid carbon dioxide at its refinery in Casablanca during the first quarter of 2027, as part of a project involving more than 500 million dirhams in investment and initial production capacity of about 20,000 tonnes a year.
Work on the project is continuing ahead of the unit's entry into industrial operation and the delivery of the first volumes of liquid carbon dioxide during the first quarter of next year, following an update to the previous schedule, which had targeted the start of production before the end of 2026.
Recovering emissions and converting them into a food-grade product
The project is based on recovering carbon dioxide generated by industrial operations at Cosumar's refinery in Casablanca and processing it to produce food-grade liquid carbon dioxide. This will allow part of the industrial emissions to be converted into a material for use in the food industry and other industrial applications.
The group unveiled the project at the International Exhibition of Agriculture in Morocco last May, before later statements put the investment earmarked for the unit at more than 500 million dirhams and set first-phase production capacity at 20,000 tonnes a year of liquid carbon dioxide meeting food-use requirements.
New industrial activity targeting the domestic market
The project represents a new industrial direction for the group, based on recovering the carbon dioxide generated by its production operations and converting it into a product that can be directed to the domestic market, rather than treating it solely as an industrial emission.
The new unit is part of Cosumar's investments aimed at developing its industrial activities and enhancing the recovery of products and outputs associated with its production operations. The delivery of the first volumes during the first quarter of 2027 is expected to mark the project's entry into commercial operation.
