Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) became the first company to see its market value surpass $1 trillion on Monday, September 21, 2026, after its shares rose 9.6% to $613.31, a record high, as investors bet on the company’s growing role in artificial-intelligence computing.
Fourth U.S. chipmaker to surpass $1 trillion
AMD became the fourth U.S. chipmaker to surpass a $1 trillion market value, after Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron. Nvidia crossed that threshold in 2023 before its market value rose to more than $5 trillion.
Chip stocks rise
The gains spread to the semiconductor sector, with Intel shares rising about 11.8% and Qualcomm shares gaining 4.5%, while the broader chip-stock index rose 2.7% to its highest level in more than a month.
Thomas Hayes, chairman of New York-based Great Hill Capital, said money was flowing back into artificial-intelligence bets, noting that investors viewed the field as capable of withstanding an economic slowdown driven by Federal Reserve policy.
Expansion into artificial-intelligence systems
AMD has accelerated the launch of artificial-intelligence products, moving from selling individual chips to providing integrated systems that combine processors, networking equipment and related hardware as it competes with Nvidia.
Growing demand for central processing units used alongside graphics processors in inference servers has also helped the company take market share from Intel. AMD shares have jumped 185% since the start of 2026, compared with a 15.8% gain for the technology-heavy Nasdaq.
