Iraq boosts energy investment with development of Ajil oilfield

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi presided over the signing of a 25-year contract between North Oil Company and Kipt to develop the Ajil oilfield, with the aim of increasing oil and gas production and supporting Iraq’s energy supplies.

Integrated field development program

The contract calls for an integrated program to develop the field, rehabilitate its facilities and increase its production capacity, as part of Iraq’s plans to expand the energy sector and make greater use of its oil and gas fields.

Oil and gas production targets

The development plan aims to raise gas production from about 135 million standard cubic feet per day to nearly 300 million cubic feet per day, and increase oil production from around 30,000 barrels per day to about 40,000 barrels per day.

Facility upgrades and well rehabilitation

The development work includes upgrading production facilities and rehabilitating damaged wells and infrastructure, as well as improving processing, transportation and storage operations and introducing modern technologies to increase production efficiency and reduce losses.

The Ajil field is located in Salah al-Din province, about 30 kilometers north of Tikrit. It stretches across an area approximately 40 kilometers long and five kilometers wide and contains 91 production and exploration wells.

Bringing the field back into operation

The field sustained extensive damage during military operations and security events in the area, leading to production stoppages for periods of time. North Oil Company brought the field back into operation in 2018 after rehabilitation work that included repairing several wells and production-related facilities.
